3 Ways to Use Pinterest as a Blogger

First of all, surprise! I added a new section to my blog. As a blogger who primarily focuses on giving advice to others, I thought Blogging Advice would be the perfect addition to what I already do.

I’ve been blogging for a few years now, although not consistently until recently, but I have a ton that I’ve learned throughout that time. One of the things that’s really changed my blog is Pinterest. Actually, it’s probably the biggest thing.

I’ve heard a ton of people say that Pinterest isn’t social media, it’s a Business Tool. The more I’ve learned about it all, the more I agree with that statement. Of course, it can be a way to connect personally with other readers and bloggers, but it should primarily be a way to promote your blog.

Plus, it can be one of the biggest sources of traffic for your blog, if you’re using it correctly!

I’ve just recently switched up my Pinterest (CLICK THE LINK TO SEE) to reflect a Business Tool and not social media, but I’m already seeing results. I’ve seen more traffic coming to my site from Pinterest, and I’ve had an increase in followers on my page. And hey, it’s only going to go up from here!

So, before I spend more time digressing, I wanted to tell you all about the three main things I did to my Pinterest, that increased the traffic and followers.

 

YOUR BOARDS ARE FOR THEM, NOT YOU!

Before I learned this tip, my boards were largely focused on things like fitness, outfits for each season, recipes, quotes that I liked, etc… It was all based around on what I liked, sure, but had almost nothing to do with what I blogged.

When people find your Pinterest page, they want to know what you can offer them. It’s great if you like fashion and food and quotes, but is that what your blog is all about!?

For example, mine is focused on advice, travel & my faith. There was almost nothing on my page to suggest that. Furthermore, even though I had picture of traveling, they were just pictures of places. They weren’t pictures that linked to tips, secrets, etc.

So, I made all of those boards private and added new ones like “Travel Advice,” “Advice,” “Blogging Tips,” “Faith Quotes,” and the most important “My Blog Posts.” Now, if you go on my page, you’ll see what I offer and you’ll also see a ton of helpful articles and blogs linked in each board. Plus, I still kept the very esthetically-pleasing “Travel” board. Of course.

Don’t forget to have a board with just your blog posts! People want to see what you’re writing about!

 

YOUR INTRO SHOULD EXPLAIN WHAT YOU OFFER

Remember how I said Pinterest is a business tool!? That should also be reflected in your intro on the top of your page! Tell people what you do and how you can help them. Most importantly, don’t forget to link your website.

For example, my intro says;

“I share stories about travel, my faith, & tons of life advice, in an effort to help & inspire Millennials, like myself.”

I’m sure there are better intros out there, but I still think mine fits what I need. You can clearly tell what I do and who I target with each post. There shouldn’t be any confusion to your readers and visitors.

This intro is also modeled on my little “About Me” blurb on my blog and on my social medias. Consistency is a huge thing.

 

CREATE A THEME WITH THE FEATURED IMAGE FOR EACH BLOG POST

If you go onto this page, you’ll notice how there’s consistency with the way I create my photos for each blog post. It’s a simple circle, website link on the bottom & the same two fonts, used in different ways. (Plus, there’s a heart that matches each photo’s color theme.)

When you see a photo from my blog, the hope is you’ll know it’s from my blog.

I use PicMonkey to create each image (Photoshop is not necessary) and stock photos (which there are a ton of) for each picture. This way, I don’t need to worry about taking pictures for each blog post, only for Instagram! I know that’s a debated topic between bloggers (some take their own pictures, others use stock photos) but both ways are fine!

Just make sure that if you use a stock photo, it’s one that you have permission to use! Copyright infringement is not something you want to deal with.

I also am very intentional about the description I put under each photo on Pinterest, that comes from my blog. Your post should be linked to the specific blog post you’re advertising and should have key words that describe what your blog is about.

For example, in the description for this post, I’d have something like;

“Pinterest for Bloggers | Blogging on Pinterest | Blogging Tips | Blogging Advice”

and so on. I recommend each “phrase” is two to three words and would be something people would search on Pinterest. Put yourself in their shoes and think about what you’d be searching for. Don’t forget to separate each “phrase,” too!

Remember, everything on Pinterest should be tailored to what your intended audience needs. Not what you want.
